An Alternative To KOrganizer: Evolution Mail And Calendar

If you want something like KOrganizer for reminders, you can install Evolution Mail and Calendar from the Software Center. I've tested it and it works in Ubuntu 11.10.

You just export from KOrganizer to .ics format and import it in Evolution.

I saw Evolution Mail and Calendar available for Windows too. Just Google it (Note: I've never tried this yet in Windows).

This is good for Windows 7 users since there is no default Calendar reminders for it, unless you buy Microsoft Office with Outlook in it, which is really expensive nowadays. I really can't understand why they removed this feature that is available in Windows Vista.

I guess, we'll never know.

KOrganizer Reminders Not Working In Ubuntu 11.10

Is it just me or this always happen in Linux world? One thing they fixed it then the next time there it is again. My patience is trying, but I just couldn't bear it. It's like this will go on forever, like a turning wheel that never ends.

In the early days of the internet, as I remember the first time I connected on-line, it's only in text form (yeah, very boring). There were no photos, videos just texts, and you can only connect to libraries like the library of congress, and government sites, nothing else.

In those days, there were only mirc where you can chat on-line. No Facebook, Google+, Youtube and others. And yet, I still find abuse on some chat rooms, where they talk to you and send you lewd photos.

Now, it seems that abuse is very rampant. Copyright infringements like those mp3s being uploaded and shared, videos, porn websites everywhere, which also infect your computers with malware, viruses, etc.

When I see all of these, I can see that the Internet is used for evil purposes rather than good. And, I sometimes wonder if the Internet will give us a better future.

Ubuntu 11.10 Kdenlive Problem

I can't seem to run Kdenlive in Ubuntu 11.10. Having some problem detecting SDL module in MLT framework. To be honest, no solution here but to install another great program called Openshot, which works.

Again, sorry to disappoint you guys with this Ubuntu upgrade. Hopefully, they get it fixed right away. So, my advice is to stick with the previous versions of what you have rather upgrade. I guess, we all learned a lesson.

Ok, there seems to be a bug in jackd or ALSA or PulseAudio. I've been working since yesterday to get it to run and did these:

You need to un-install jackd2 and install jackd1 instead using Synaptic.

Then, install Ardour (686), and remove the Ardour default installation.

Run Audacity.

Launch QjackCtl and click Setup->Interface to hw:0,0 or default (vice-versa).

That's it!

First, you must have a Google Account using Google App Engine.

Fill-in Project Name and Package, click Finish.

Right-click on the created project in the Project Explorer->Google->Deploy to App Engine (This may take awhile).

To run the web app, right-click the project->Debug As->Web Application.

You will see a link to launch a web browser. You need to install Google Chrome for debugging, and install the Chrome Web Toolkit Plugin.

Add the Browser: Window->Preferences->General->Web Browser. Chrome is located here: /usr/bin/google-chrome.

Double-click the link when debugging, then run Chrome.

You will see it's default web application.

I've encountered some broken .deb packages in Humble Indie Bundle 3 like Osmos and Revenge Of The Titans. To install Osmos, from the command line:

$sudo dpkg -i [deb package]

Warning: This method may generate broken packages. To fix this, run Ubuntu Software Center and a pop-up will appear telling you to repair the broken packages. Click repair. It will download the missing packages.

Or, you may try to install the .tar.gz files rather than the .deb packages (Haven't tried this but it may work, and which is safer).

Although you can install the KDE desktop on your Ubuntu Gnome or Unity, it's better to install it as dual-boot and creating a partition for it. Don't forget to create an extended partition rather than primary partition since your drive can accommodate only 4 primary partitions. The recommended partitioning scheme would be:

/ - root should have enough space for the entire OS and additional software. In my experience, it's better to assign at least 100 GB, for applications, games, etc.

/boot - boot partition should have at least 250 MB.

/swap - This depends on your installed RAM or memory. If you have 4GB of RAM or less, assign 2GB or more.

Kubuntu is a flavor of Ubuntu that uses KDE as Desktop Manager like Gnome or Unity for Ubuntu. There are others, like Xubuntu for lower-cpu computers, Edubuntu for schools and others.

How To Dual-Boot Meego and Ubuntu 10.04

First, you have to prepare these requirements:

Ubuntu Live CD
MeeGo USB Thumb Drive.
A Netbook with Intel Atom processor.
Internet Connection.

First, install Gparted in Ubuntu and partition your resize your drive to free disk space (At least 20GB).

Install Image-Writer in Ubuntu and put MeeGo image you downloaded to a 4GB USB Drive.

Restart and boot from your USB Drive where your MeeGo is.

Install MeeGo on the partition you have free space (Be sure you select Use Free Disk Space and NOT remove the Ubuntu partition). Important: you must use EXT3 as your filesystem and not the standard BTRFS.

Boot from your Ubuntu Live CD and add: ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair in Software Sources.
Install Boot-Repair.

Run Boot-Repair, after that Restart.

Now you have Ubuntu and MeeGo shown as unknown os.

Note: You can also triple boot Ubuntu, MeeGo and even Windows. But, you have to install Windows, Ubuntu, MeeGo, respectively.

How to Set-up Qt for Android

Download Qt SDK for Android. Install in /opt/necessitas by sudo in terminal.

Download Android SDK and NDK, then extract.

Go to the Android SDK folder under /tools, run ./android

Install SDK version 2.2.

Download Apache Ant 1.8.0 and install OpenJDK SDK. Check by $ant -version

Go to Qt Creator->Tools->Qt4 add qmake path to Qt for Android SDK.

Go to Android tab->Browse the Android SDK, NDK, and Ant. Add AVD (100MB).

Go back to Qt4 tab, Build GDB, QML debuggers (Build All).

Open Project Files and go to Project->Run->Package Configurations Details->Application Libraries and check all.

Go to Deploy Configurations Details->Install Ministro and Download and browse for Ministro.apk.

This will install the Qt libraries to the Android Virtual Device (AVD).

hen creating a Qt Quick project, Add a Resource folder for all QML and contents (.qrc).

Run installed Safari, executable for Flash player to install.
Configure Wine->Windows XP->Graphics->uncheck Allow Pixel Shader. (This fixes the Quicktime bug, which allows you to watch Apple's Quicktime movies.

To install Flash inside where you installed Safari:
Click Install->Install a .pol package or an unsupported application.
Manual Installation->Forward->Edit an existing application->choose the prefix you named where you installed Safari, then please select the install file to run, and choose the Flash Installer file which you downloaded, and install. After installation completes, in POL, click Cancel. This is how to install other applications inside a wineprefix you created.

Ubuntu Unity

Maybe you've already heard that the future of Ubuntu will use Unity instead of Gnome, and Wayland instead of X Server. Since these are new, next versions of Ubuntu will be buggy, and Mark Shuttleworth has expressed that it will take 3 years for it to mature on the desktop starting on 11.04 to be released next year. So, my advice is to stick with 10.04 since it has LTS (Long-Term Support) for 3 years.

In my opinion , his reason with using these technologies, is for mobile devices since it uses uTouch for touch screens like the iPad or Android Tablets, and can also be used for mobile phones because it is much responsive. His decision on Wayland, I guess, since Wayland can also make X Server run as client, it will also support the desktop, but it will take time and patience.

Fruity Loops 9 works in Ubuntu using PlayOnLinux. Just install it in PlayOnLinux, but errors will occur during installation, just press Ok and it will continue the installation process. If you purchased it, you can import the registry keys in PlayOnLinux: Configure->Registry Editor->File->Import registry.

What I've tried: Using Presets, Generators, Effects, MIDI recording (although there is some lag). What I do is record MIDI using Muse, edit it, and export it to a MIDI file, then import in Fruity Loops, export to a WAV file and import it to Ardour, edit the mixdown in Audacity for post-production. You can print musical notes in Rosegarden using the MIDI file.

You can also use LMMS (Linux Multimedia Studio) for soundfonts that you can download on the Internet.

I was trying to download large files, and I could only find few Firefox download managers. Some of them, when I download files, it gets corrupted and is unusable. Therefore, I looked for Ubuntu apps in the Ubuntu Software Center, and searched for download manager. I've found several like Gwget, and KGet but settled for KGet.

To use KGet, you right-click on a link and copy the download link location, then New Download, and paste the URL. Or, drag to the KGet icon on the lower-right corner.

Sometimes, downloading gets interrupted. You just have to click Resume. At other sites, your downloads gets stalled, and in order to resume, you have to copy again the link, right-click on the downloading file->Transfer Settings->click on the file->click Mirrors->Remove the current mirror, then Add the new download link. After pressing Ok, the downloading process resumes.

1.To fix(almost) sound issue, configure wine: Configure this Application->Configure Wine->Audio->change 41000 to 48000 and check both ALSA and OSS.
2.In URU, use default graphics, remove Anisotropic Filtering, and un-check Vertical Sync, then change resolution according to your monitor.
3.Minimize sound effects, and remove ambient sound. You may also disable voice chat if it's not working. Use OSS instead of ALSA.

Note: The mouse cursor is not supposed to be, showing only a white box, and stuttering sound effects.

Playing Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne in Linux

I've never thought this is possible in Linux: play Windows only games. If you haven't much heard of Wine, it is a Windows compatibility layer for Linux but is not an emulator. Before, installing Wine and installing applications in Wine is rather difficult. But now, it has never been easier on Ubuntu's newest version 10.04. Just click on Applications->Ubuntu Software Center and install PlayOnLinux. It will install both Wine and PlayOnLinux.

To install Warcraft 3, Just run PlayOnLinux and select Install, insert the CD and it will install required patches for it. After installation, Go to Applications->Wine->Programs->Warcraft III.

That's it!

Battle.net (you have to apply the patch) and single player works well. The only thing I've noticed is that there are no movie trailers unlike playing on Windows. But, you can watch the movies in this directory:

/home//.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/WarcraftIII/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/Movies.

I'm into games recently and as gaming in Linux is not that good compared to Windows. But now that Steam has announced to bring their games to Linux, this might change. I've read about Wolfire's promotion regarding donating to charity and developers by giving six quality games: Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru, World of Goo, Penumbra, Overture, and Samorost 2.

Aquaria is a 2D underwater adventure game, which has good graphics and rich story, which I like despite it has been created only by two developers for two years.

Gish on the other hand is a blob of tar with unique abilities that can climb walls, slide through narrow tunnels and jump with difficulty (at first), and will make you laugh.

Lugaru is a kung-fu, ars-kicking, action-packed rabbit that at first make you wonder until the story will turn to be serious. It has high-definition graphics and will be sparring with speed.

World of Goo is a creative and very unique game, which at first try will make you think it's a game for children but it is also enjoyable and fun for teenagers and adults too.

Penumbra: Overture is really creepy. When I first tried the demo years ago, I didn't have the guts to play it because it's that scary. It has very good graphics and a unique gameplay which is not only click-and-point but you must also drag the mouse to interact with the items around you.

Samorost 2 is a flash-based game that is very creative and imaginative. The game is point-and-click but it has puzzles which is out of this world. Very enjoyable, and I recommend you to buy their latest game Machinarium.

Humble Indie Bundle is going open source, but you might still want to donate at any amount to charity and help promote cross-platform games for Linux, Windows and Mac. This promotion has limited time only.

Restoring Boot Splash Having Nvidia Driver In Ubuntu 10.04

I found another bug. When switching users, the screen will dim when using the default driver. To fix this, you have to install nvidia's driver using
System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. The only problem with this is that your boot splash will be distorted and ugly. A workaround is to comment out #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=" splash vga=x" in /etc/default/grub.

Yup, still ugly. :)

Vista Cannot Detect Other Windows Partition After Installing Ubuntu 10.04

This problem is caused by Ubuntu 10.04 when upgrading the grub boot loader installed in Windows partition where the MBR resides. To fix this, you have to restore Windows' boot loader by using your Windows installation DVD:

1. Boot using the Windows installation DVD.

2. Click repair Windows.

3. It will show you where your Windows is installed. If not, you may have to load drivers.

4. Click Next.

5. Choose MSDOS prompt.

6. At the prompt, type in:

bootrec /fixmbr then press enter.
bootrec /fixboot then press enter.

7. Click Finish then Restart.

Your grub will now be erased and Windows boot loader is restored. When you log-in, Windows will detect other partitions.

Now, how about Ubuntu?
You can restore grub on a different partition other than where your Windows is installed. It is recommended to install grub on your Ubuntu partition. You may search on how to restore grub using your live CD.

Ubuntu 10.04 is Finally Here!

On launch day, I immediately downloaded the Live CD, before finding out that Ubuntu missed a bug that would not detect other OS if you dual-boot from Windows and Ubuntu. Fortunately, they have fixed the problem as soon as possible, so I downloaded it again today.

If you have a previous installation of prior versions, it is recommended that you clean-install rather than upgrading using the Update Manager tool since I tried it and had some bugs like no title bars in administrator account, the grub 2 installation did not install it in my first hard drive (since I dual-boot), but at upgrade, it asks for partitions to install grub to (you must not miss this). Of course, it is recommended to backup all your precious data before being adventurous.

What I did was, burn to a CDR, then using USB Disk Creator, install a Live Ubuntu on a USB drive without persistence (because it takes time to boot), then reboot. In your BIOS, choose to boot from the live USB drive, then from there, install to your partition you want. Remember to check the disk to write the bootloader (grub) to in the final step before installation by clicking the Advanced button, and choose the partition. After that, everything looks good from here.

Last year, I created a Java app game with a dancing 3D avatar (not the movie) that dances along with a tune (It took me months of hard work to make it), and it got rejected because they said that it has no music when the game starts. I kept telling them that it runs fine with the emulator and I even bought a cellphone just to test the app and works just fine. Obviously, I stopped developing it since they rejected it because of that. Now, a few months later, they added the same concept game to their app store called Deer Dance Mania. Very sad since they are a rich telecom company and I am just a lone developer and they ripped me off. On top of that, they even rated it as five-stars. My first impression is that it looks nice and it's easier to navigate on the applications installed since it is categorized on the menu. After that, I took the plunge and installed it. As I've said before, Kubuntu is for those who wanted a different looking desktop other than the Ubuntu default Gnome, which looks almost like running Windows. I've tried it and it's really looks very attractive especially when Desktop effects are enabled: translucent taskbar, nice icons, opacity of every applications, etc. (Well, you can also have some of this features in Ubuntu Gnome using compiz), but overall, it's really nice indeed.

I've been using Ubuntu for three years now, and I'm an Ubuntu user ever since. I'm not saying that Windows is bad it's just that it's quite expensive, living in a poor country, having prices with the exchange rate in pesos, for me it's better to save money than spend it on original software that costs around P3,000 each.
